Midwives Exclusive: aiming for positive birth experiences
“The way a woman gives birth can affect the whole of the rest of her life. How can that not matter? Unless the woman herself does not matter”Beverley Beech and Belinda Phipps
At Midwives Exclusive we believe in a woman’s right to birth and we believe that birth matters. It is not just one day in your life; it is an event that has the power to change you forever. Pregnancy and birth is a journey and our role as private midwives is to be by your side during this journey.
We are a group of four midwives who are passionate about moms and babies. Weendeavor to provide the correct guidance and environment to make your birth special and supported. This is achieved by antenatal care during pregnancy where we not only attend to the medical side of antenatal care but also endeavor to form a trust relationship and begin to get to know each other. We usually see our clients from as early as 14 weeks after their first sonar which is around 10-‐12 weeks and also offered at our practice.
As midwives we always have time in the appointments for advice and education on what to expect and how to deal with any concerns you may have.We really spend time getting to know one another and building a mutual trust relationship.
We assist you in developing a birth plan that details your wishes orf your birth, incorporating comfort measures such as using massage, water, music and movement to help you cope. You can choose to birth at a venue that best suites your needs and personality. The birth venue ranges from:
- a hospital midwife unit (Femina Hospital or Wilgers Hospital),
- a free standing birth centre (affectionately known as our ‘birth house’)
- homebirth
Regardless of the venue you choose our care remains the same from beginning to end.
After the birth of your baby our care continues into the postnatal period where we have regular follow ups in order to ensure mom and baby’s wellbeing – including feeding and weighing of baby, checking for signs of jaundice, education on baby and postpartum care and any other areas where we can be of assistance. Follow ups occur in the hospital, at ourconsulting rooms and at the clients home.
Types of births 2018
We aim to give every woman afair chance at having a normal birth, whist carefully balancing mom and baby’s wellbeing too. Midwives Exclusive was established 21 years ago and we have seen throughout the 21 years that our recipe is truly successful in meeting our clients needs and ensuring both safety and an overall positive birth experiences.
We follow the South African Nursing Councils Scope of Practice and SA Maternity Guidelines to ensure safe, efficient care for mom and baby. Midwives are specialists in low risk pregnancies and birth.
We advise and assist clients to secure a backup plan either in one of our private or government hospitals. Whilst we have a 85%normal birth rate we cannot guarantee that every woman will birth without complications. We need to ensure safety first and when a pregnancy or birth becomes high risk or more complicated we need to transfer or refer the client promptly.
The World Health Organization has found that a 10-‐15% cesarean section rate is the rate at which necessary cesareans are performed in order to save mom or baby. Midwives Exclusive has a 19% cesarean rate which is low in comparison with the high caesarean rate in the private sector (higher than 90% in some private hospitals). For out of hospital births such as at the birth house or in your own home, we work with Life Med Ambulance Service to ensure smooth transport to hospital in case the need arises.
If the client is already in the midwife unit at a hospital we would simply call the back up obstetrician that you have booked with to take over the care or give a second opinion.
Our support team is wide and includes referral links to a sonographer, mom and baby yoga, well baby Sister, physio, Chiropractors, reflexology and more. We host ongoing prenatal birth preparation classes, natural birth workshops, VBAC prep workshops and postnatal support groups, birth reflection workshops, introduction to solids and many more. You are welcome to come to one of our free info days for further information or contact us for details.
